Burr Oak Console
This piece was conceived around a cross section of a much larger oak burr trunk sourced locally in its raw state. Burr oak is usually cut for veneer as it produces a greater square footage of highly sought after decorative timber. Because of the wild nature of this section of timber, cutting for veneer was impractical.
We wanted to produce a piece of furniture which would allow the original form of the timber to be retained and its form lent itself to a strong structural design.
The loose bark is painstakingly removed by hand to reveal the underlying burr structure. The cut surfaces are cleaned and polished whereas the natural surface is oiled but left in its natural state.
Materials: Toughened glass and polished granite plinth on rollers.
Width: 1200mm (47 in)
Depth: 500 mm (19 ¾ in)
