The Watering Hole
This coffee table was made at the invitation of Philip Lawson Johnston, Royal Warrant holder as Hand Engraver of Glass to Her Majesty the Queen. The table was designed for an exhibition of Lawson Johnston's work at Patrick Mavros, the Fulham Road Gallery of the maverick Zimbabwean silversmith of the same name. The concept was to create a coffee table to suit the African theme of the gallery and began with locating a piece of wood that implied a synergy with the elemental nature of the African bush. Mavros is best known for his exquisite silver animals table settings.
With this context in mind the table was designed around a solid piece of yew, gently hollowed at the top to form a bowl. The natural edge of the yew cut in cross section is viewed through the glass to appear as the edge of a watering hole. The top and underside of the glass is engraved by Lawson Johnston to create an astonishing three-dimensional scene of animals approaching from the bush to drink.
This first time collaborative piece is available to purchase from Patrick Mavros, 104-106 Fulham Road, London, SW3. Enquiries to: 020 7052 0001. If you are interested in commissioning a piece of furniture with hand engraved glass top please enquire with Hawkins Furniture.
